Unilever has called for major changes to the world of cosmetics. The company, which oversees personal-care brands including Dove, Vaseline, Axe, and Love Beauty and Planet, announced its support for a global ban on animal testing in the beauty industry.
Just weeks after the state of California announced it was banning the sale of cosmetic products that undergo animal testing, Unilever has expressed its desire to see similar action around the world. According to a press release from the company, Unilever announced support of the Humane Society International’s #BeCrueltyFree campaign.
The press release states that Unilever plans to work and support ongoing efforts by the Humane Society International to end cosmetic animal testing. The campaign’s work, which includes planned legislation, educating consumers, and raising awareness about what happens during animal testing, is aimed at ending the practice of animal testing within five years.
As Glamour points out, Unilever’s support for an end to this type of testing could spark the beginning of change in the beauty industry. As of July 2018, Yahoo reports, 80 percent of countries still allow animal testing.
“Animal testing for cosmetics has been banned in the EU since 2013, and we hope that an adoption of similar bans in other countries will accelerate the regulatory acceptance of alternative approaches, and thereby remove any requirements for any animal testing for cosmetics anywhere in the world,” says David Blanchard, the chief research and development officer at Unilever.
Along with the news of its support for cruelty-free cosmetic creation, Unilever also shared that Dove has been certified as cruelty-free by PETA. Glamour reports that Dove hasn’t tested on animals for more than 30 years, but the accreditation from PETA means that Dove products will now carry PETA’s cruelty-free logo.
