The Big Picture: An Interview With Hospitality Leader, Karim El Berkchi

Bahrain Confidential speaks with Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain’s Director of Operations

What does it take to be a Hospitality Leader? In an industry that never slows down, it takes utmost dedication and a mindset for excellence to deliver quality guest experiences day in and out. Each year, Bahrain Confidential highlights leaders across the hospitality industry on the island to understand what’s new, what’s next, and what makes them the best.

What was the best-ever lesson in leadership that you learned, and from whom?

For me, leadership is more than authority and being in charge; it’s about empowering others to achieve success for themselves and the organisation. It’s also about being able to make decisions in favour of the bigger picture or the organisation’s goals rather than for personal gain.

Do you have any major plans for the property?

We are launching a few culinary projects, including adding another theme night starting in January 2024 and introducing a new project at the pool area. Additionally, we will be launching a new concept at the lobby lounge with live entertainment.

Since we met last year, have there been any major changes for you or the property?

As we are known for the best brunch in Bahrain, we have developed a new concept called “Thursday Night Brunch.” It has been a great success, and we are extremely proud of it!

What have been your biggest challenges (and successes) over the past few years?

The pandemic following our ambitious renovation proved to be a challenge. It was, however, a memorable experience and we learned a lot from it. We have achieved many incredible things over the past few years, including staff development and promotions. We also implemented the zero plastic project, becoming the first hotel in Bahrain to be certified by Green Globe. Additionally, we have won several awards both locally and internationally.

Other than a great team, is there one unique quality that makes your hotel stand out in Bahrain?

We are a passionate team and experts at what we do. We are dedicated to providing exceptional service and going above and beyond while being attentive to our guests’ needs and exceeding their expectations.

What challenges and opportunities do you see for Bahrain’s hospitality industry in the coming years?

While challenges exist, the vision, hard work, and efforts of the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA) and the Ministry of Tourism in Bahrain are ensuring Bahrain has a bright future.

Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you?

A leader in hospitality is responsible for inspiring and delivering memorable experiences while ensuring 100% guest satisfaction.
