#IWD2021: Interview with Zahra Lari

International Women’s Day (IWD) is an annual event to celebrate women’s achievements and spread the message of female empowerment and gender equality across the world.

As the day grows near, Bahrain Confidential celebrates the achievements of women in Bahrain and around the world by putting them on the spotlight and knowing how they #ChoosetoChallenge every day.

Today’s spotlight is on Zahra Lari. Zahra is the first Emirati figure skater to compete internationally. She is also a five-time National Champion and the Founder and Board member of the Emirates Skating Club.

What does the 2021 International Women’s Day slogan, #ChoosetoChallenge mean for you in your work life?

For me, the #ChoosetoChallenge slogan for International Women’s Day 2021 means we must all challenge ourselves to create change and a better world of non-bias and equality for women throughout the world. This is for women in sports, women in the work place and for all women in the world.

What barriers have you faced, as a woman, in becoming successful in your field?

I have faced many barriers throughout the years. From simply being a female athlete in a very unique and uncommon sport, to being criticized heavily online. Some type of difficulties will always be there but it’s very important to continue and overcome them one by one.

How did you overcome them?

My passion for sport, continued patience, determination, and working very hard have helped me overcome many barriers but the most helpful has been trying to understand and educate people about women in sport.

What’s one tip that greatly impacted you and your career trajectory?

I would say that the best tip or advice I received would be to always believe in myself, to follow my passions and dreams and to work hard for what I want.

On International Women’s Day, what is the most important message you want to send out to young women thinking about their careers?

“Be strong. Be confident. Believe in yourself and know that you have no limitations”.

What do you enjoy doing the most when you’re off work?

I love going to the ladies’ beach, spending time with my family and playing games in the pool.
