Central, the flagship Lima restaurant helmed by chefs Virgilio Martinez and Pía León, has been named the world’s best restaurant at The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards 2023. The prestigious Lima establishment has taken the top spot, succeeding previous winners and continuing to elevate the culinary scene in Lima and beyond.
The awards celebrated culinary brilliance across five continents. Asia was well represented with seven restaurants on the list, including Singapore’s Odette, which was named The Best Restaurant in Asia (No.14). New entries included Le Du (No.15) and Gaggan Anand (No.17) in Bangkok, and Sézanne, Tokyo (No.37). The Middle East & Africa also made their mark, with Dubai’s Trèsind Studio (No.11) named The Best Restaurant in the region, followed by Orfali Bros Bistro (No.46).
The Gin Mare Art of Hospitality Award was bestowed upon Miguel Ángel Millán, sommelier of Madrid’s Diverxo. Millán’s exceptional curation of pairings to complement chef Dabiz Muñoz’s dynamic menu has elevated the restaurant’s beverage programme to new heights, earning him a loyal following among Madrid’s food enthusiasts and establishing Diverxo as an international dining destination.
New York’s Atomix (No.8) was awarded the Villa Massa Highest Climber Award, having ascended 25 places from its 2022 ranking. The intimate 14-seat restaurant, run by husband-and-wife team Junghyun ‘JP’ and Ellia Park, was also named The Best Restaurant in North America. Their innovative Korean cuisine has received widespread acclaim, further solidifying their place in the global culinary scene.
Julien Royer of Singapore’s Odette (No.14) was honoured with the Estrella Damm Chefs’ Choice Award, a special accolade given to a chef who has significantly influenced the culinary community. Meanwhile, Fyn in Cape Town was recognised for its commitment to sustainability, winning the Flor de Caña Sustainable Restaurant Award.
The World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards 2023, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna, were held at Valencia’s Les Arts Opera House. The event marked a celebration of global culinary excellence, with the integrity and authenticity of the voting process and the resulting lists being of paramount importance.
