Bahrain’s handicrafts carry generations of knowledge passed from hand to hand, long before they ever reached a gallery wall or a museum case. Pearl diving, boat-building, weaving and pottery were once everyday skills, tied to the rhythms of village life and the island’s relationship with the sea. Learning them through workshops today is less about nostalgia and more about keeping a thread of identity alive in a country that has changed quickly.
The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) runs a programme of workshops throughout the year, and July brings a full calendar at Al Jasra Handicrafts and Al Sultan Garden. Each session is led by practising artisans, offering a hands-on introduction rather than a lecture.
Whether you are after a new hobby, a cultural souvenir made with your own hands, or simply a few hours away from a screen, these workshops are open to residents and visitors alike.

Resin art is a newer addition to Bahrain’s craft scene, using coloured resin layered to mimic the textures of the sea, marble or abstract design. It pairs well with the country’s seafaring heritage, often used to recreate the blues and golds of the Gulf coastline.
Smocking is a gathered embroidery technique that creates texture and elasticity in fabric, traditionally used to decorate garments across the region. It is detailed, patient work, suited to those who enjoy needlework.
The misbah, or prayer beads, holds both spiritual and decorative significance across the Arab and Islamic world. This workshop covers the basics of stringing, knotting and finishing a set by hand.
Bakhoor, scented wood chips soaked in oils and resins, is burned throughout Gulf homes for gatherings and special occasions. Participants will learn how to blend and prepare their own mixture to take home.
Bahrain’s maritime history runs deep, from pearling dhows to fishing boats built along its coastline. This workshop introduces the basic techniques behind traditional wooden boat construction, a skill once essential to island life.

Naqda is a traditional gold and silver thread embroidery once reserved for ceremonial garments and bridal wear across the Gulf. The workshop introduces the stitching techniques behind this intricate, metallic style of needlework.
