Bahrain-based stylist Aysha Mattar juggles many roles: mother, wife, and environmentalist. Her career has evolved from running a pioneering fashion blog in 2009 to becoming a conscious personal stylist for both women and men. Aysha combines her passion for fashion and sustainability by helping clients build wardrobes that reflect their true selves, focusing on upcycling and preloved items. Her process, paired with positivity, prioritizes individuality over trends.

What’s the first word that comes to mind when you think of Bahrain, and why?

Home, safety, and gratitude. Ironically, we often forget what it truly means to live surrounded by loved ones and how we should never take it for granted.

In your opinion, what does the future of Bahrain look like 10 years from now?

I hope we’ll maintain our strong sense of safety while expanding our reach and connections to the rest of the world.

If you could safeguard one aspect of Bahrain’s culture or heritage for future generations, what would it be?

The sense of community. It’s something I’ve been so fortunate to grow up with and now have the privilege of passing down to my children. I truly hope that never changes.

Can you share a cherished memory that perfectly captures your love for Bahrain?

I have so many cherished memories, but one that stands out is when my son, at just 3 or 4 years old, was leaving a country we were lucky enough to visit and proudly said he was going back home to see his “hundreds of cousins.” Of course, he doesn’t actually have hundreds, but the pride and joy he felt in coming back to a place surrounded by love and family was heartwarming. It perfectly captures what makes Bahrain so special.

Do you have a favourite spot in Bahrain? What makes it so special to you?

My home is my absolute favourite place on the island. A close second would be Bahrain Bay—it’s my happy place. Being surrounded by the water gives me that serene island life vibe, all set against a stunning modern backdrop.

Is there a Bahraini tradition or custom you wish the world could experience? Why do you think it’s so unique?

Family lunches. Growing up, they were some of my fondest memories. Every Thursday, aunts and uncles would come together for lunch. As a child, I loved it because I got to hang out with my cousins, and as a teen and young adult, I’d often invite a friend or two to experience the joy of sitting around a dining table with three different generations, all of us enjoying saafi and rice. It’s unique because not everyone is lucky enough to grow up surrounded by not just immediate family but also third and fourth cousins. It’s a true blessing.
