Ilbarza: A Unique Experience by The Tree of Life

Bahraincover

Bahrain’s most famous tree just got a neighbour. IlBarza Café by OCTO has opened beside the Tree of Life, giving visitors a reason to linger longer at one of the island’s most unusual and loved natural landmarks.

Attraction 101: The Tree of Life

The Tree of Life has stood alone in Bahrain’s southern desert for more than 400 years. Nobody knows where it gets its water. There are no obvious sources nearby, no rivers or underground springs that explain how a mesquite tree survives and grows in Sakhir – the island’s desert region. It just does.

That mystery, combined with its age and isolation, has made it a cultural symbol. Locals and visitors come to see it, take photos beneath its sprawling branches, and sit in the quiet. It’s regal, with winding barks, and inexplicably alive.

What to Expect at the Café

The café sits in the desert just beside the tree, offering seating in the open air. It’s designed as a simple stop rather than a full dining destination. Think coffee, light refreshments, and a place to sit after walking around the site. With Majlis-patterned seats and tables, it’s a unique Bahraini experience at a unique Bahraini spot.

The setting is the main draw. You’re drinking coffee in the middle of the desert, with a 400-year-old tree a few metres away. The experience is quiet, slightly surreal, and worth the drive if you’re already planning to visit the Tree of Life.

IlBarza is functional, atmospheric, and adds a layer of comfort to what’s usually a quick stop.

When to Visit

The café is open until 27 March, operating daily from 4:00 pm to midnight. The late opening hours mean you can visit in the cooler evening temperatures, which makes the desert far more comfortable.

Late afternoon is ideal if you want to see the tree in daylight and stay through sunset. The light changes quickly in the desert, and the tree looks different depending on the time of day.

Because it’s a seasonal pop-up, IlBarza won’t be around permanently. If you’ve been meaning to visit the Tree of Life, this two-month window gives you a reason to go now rather than later.

Getting There

The Tree of Life is located in the southern part of Bahrain, roughly 40 minutes from Manama, depending on traffic. The site is free to visit, though you’ll need a vehicle to reach it. Parking is informal. You pull off the road near the tree. The café adds a bit of structure to the visit, but the area remains open and accessible.

Is It Worth the Trip?

If you’re looking for a peaceful, unusual spot away from the city, yes. The Tree of Life is quiet, strange, and calming. Now, the café makes it more of an outing than a quick photo stop, which suits the location well.
