This Bahrain Born and Raised Actress Starred in the New Marvel Show!

The world knows her as Scarlet Scarab – the protector of Egypt. But if you’ve only just started watching Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Moon Knight, keep an eye out for Layla El-Faouly. Bahrain-born and raised, May Calamawy plays the two characters in the much-acclaimed Disney+ miniseries, becoming the first Arab superhero in the MCU!

Layla is an archaeologist and estranged wife of Marc Spector, played by Oscar Isaac. She teams up with Spector’s other personality, Steven Grant to explore the powerful world of Egyptian Gods and Goddesses. In the show’s finale, Layla (portrayed by Calamawy) is revealed as Scarlet Scarab — the MCU’s first Arab superhero.

The 35-year-old actress has worked on several other projects including the Hulu series – Ramy, National Geographic’s The Long Road Home, CBS’ FBI and Madame Secretary, and NBC’s The Brave (source).
