TEDxDilmun brought together voices from across the globe under the theme EDGE: Explore, Discover, Grow and Engage. The event, held on 22 November, featured talks from people who represented different industries in Bahrain – accessibility advocates, innovation advisors and regional thought leaders, each sharing perspectives on progress, transformation, and personal development.
Timed perfectly, HH Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa’s closing talk left the hall in quiet reflection, delivering a powerful message about resilience, focus and the value of invisible work.
Most stories celebrate the finish line, but the noise telling you to stop creeps in just moments after you’ve begun. Everything is decided at the starting line, and the difference between the first one across the finish line and everyone else? Choosing to charge forward despite that noise.
Sheikh Nasser asks people seeking his advice a simple question: When did you last do something hard on purpose? It’s a measure of commitment. Dealing with hardships reveals whether someone is resilient, a fighter, or quits at the early signs of struggle. He follows it with two more questions: Do you have a dream? Have you started the journey towards that dream?
Sheikh Nasser starts every day with intense cardio and a cold plunge. Not for health benefits alone, but to prove he’s already conquered the hardest part of his day. When you begin with a challenge, everything else becomes manageable.
After nine attempts, Sheikh Nasser won the World Endurance Championship in 2022. Two years later, despite pressure to stop and protect his title, he competed again and won. The key? Work done in silence. Like an iceberg, people only see the tip, not the massive effort beneath the surface.
Whether you’re chasing a personal dream or building a nation’s future, the principle is the same: don’t wait for things to happen. Sheikh Nasser pointed to nations winning the next 20 years because they have vision and take action now. They own their data, build cyber resilience, and write their AI doctrines. These countries aren’t scrambling to react to change. They’re proactive, staying ahead of the curve and shaping what comes next.
The day brought together an impressive lineup of speakers representing diverse fields and perspectives. HH Sayyida Basma AlSaid, founder of Whispers of Serenity, shared insights about how we perceive our sense of belonging and wellness. Accessibility and inclusion consultant Yahye Siyad brought attention to designing spaces and systems that work for everyone, not just the majority. Innovation advisor Ben Queisser offered perspectives on driving meaningful change in organisations and communities.
From the world of science and space exploration, Dr Tahani Amer, Deputy Director of NASA’s Joint Agency Satellite Division, talked about her journey of being on the “outside” as she rose from rank to rank in one of the largest space programs in the world. Dr Waddah Al-Hashmi, Chair of the Advisory Board at the GCC Board Directors Institute, discussed parenting, the formula of success that works for everyone, and finding purpose in everything one does.
Each speaker added depth to the EDGE theme, proving that growth comes from exploring new ideas, discovering different approaches, and engaging with challenges head-on.
