What’s Not Allowed Through the King Fahd Causeway Into Saudi Arabia

Bahraincover

If you are crossing the King Fahd Causeway to catch a flight from Saudi Arabia, you need to know what items are prohibited from entering the Kingdom. Getting it wrong can mean confiscation, fines, or, in some cases, harsher legal action.

With Bahrain’s airspace closed for nearly a month, travellers heading back home are catching their flights from Dammam, in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. Getting to Dammam is easy through the King Fahd Causeway. Apart from fulfilling your transit or entry visa requirements for Saudi Arabia, you must be aware of what you can and cannot take along across the border.

This guide covers the items that are banned, restricted, or commonly flagged at the border.

Items That Are Completely Banned

Saudi Arabia’s Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) enforces a strict list of prohibited imports. These apply whether you enter the Kingdom by air, sea, or road. If any of the following are found in your vehicle or luggage at the causeway checkpoint, they will be confiscated, and you may face arrest or prosecution.

  • Pills, intoxicants, and drugs of all kinds. Saudi Arabia applies some of the harshest drug penalties in the world. Do not take this lightly.
  • Weapons and ammunition. Firearms, explosives, and all related items. Electric shock devices of all types are also banned.
  • Fireworks of all shapes and types.
  • Counterfeit currencies
  • Prohibited chewing tobacco
  • Tear gas and related agents
  • Discs and storage devices containing immoral material. This includes any media deemed pornographic or offensive to religion and public order.
  • Sexual devices, tools, and related products
  • Items containing hidden cameras. This covers modified watches, pens, glasses, small drones, and similar devices with concealed recording capability.
  • Eavesdropping devices of all shapes and types
  • Speed radar detectors
  • Nutmeg fruit and nutmeg powder. These are classified as prohibited items under Saudi regulations.
  • Books and publications that violate the regulations of the Saudi Ministry of Media
  • Pills, creams, sexual tonics, abortion pills, herbs, and lotions that are not registered with the Food and Drug Authority.
  • Laser pens. Travellers arriving in the Kingdom are allowed one laser pen only, which must be red and must not exceed 5 milliwatts.

What You Need to Disclose at Customs

All travellers passing through Saudi ports of entry, including the King Fahd Causeway, are required to disclose the following if they are in their possession:

Cash, transferable financial instruments, precious metals, or other currencies if the total value exceeds SAR 60,000 or its equivalent.

Luggage or gifts in commercial quantities, or samples exceeding personal use, where the value exceeds SAR 3,000 or its equivalent.

Tobacco products if the quantity exceeds 200 cigarettes or 500 grams.

Restricted materials requiring approval from competent authorities, such as medicines or drones.

Disclosure forms are available at the customs checkpoint. Failing to disclose any of the above when required exposes you to legal accountability and penalties.

Keep It Simple at the Border

The King Fahd Causeway is not the place to test grey areas. Don’t carry anything you’re not sure about. Pack light, carry your documents, keep prescriptions in original packaging, and declare anything that needs declaring. Save this guide and share it with anyone who might need it.
