The BTEA has just launched a series of pearl-diving experiences that let you dive into the lives and work of the Kingdom’s pearl divers.
If you’ve ever wondered what it was like when Bahrain’s economy revolved around the sea, here’s your chance to find out firsthand. The Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority has just launched a series of pearl diving experiences that let you dive into the lives and work of the Kingdom’s pearl divers.
Timed to coincide with Celebrate Bahrain 2025, these experiences are more than just a tourist activity. They’re part of BTEA’s broader strategy to diversify what Bahrain offers visitors whilst celebrating the maritime heritage that shaped the nation.
According to Dana Osama Al Saad, Deputy CEO of Resources and Projects at BTEA, the aim is to combine authentic cultural experiences with modern tourism standards, giving everyone from curious tourists to heritage-loving residents a chance to connect with an important chapter of Bahraini history.
The experiences are designed to suit different skill levels and interests, so whether you’re a certified diver or simply comfortable in the water, there’s something for you.
For those with diving certification and a sense of adventure, the Pearl Diving Experience offers the full immersion (literally). You’ll need to be 18 or over and hold a valid diving licence, but if you tick those boxes, you can experience the traditional pearling methods that once made Bahrain famous across the Gulf and beyond.

If you’re not quite ready to go deep but still want to get your feet wet, the Shallow Diving Experience is perfect. Open to swimmers aged 16 and above, these dives take place at depths of just two to four metres, making them accessible whilst still giving you a genuine taste of the pearling tradition. It’s a brilliant option for families with older teenagers or anyone who wants to try something new.
Both categories come with various packages, so you can choose whether you want to combine your diving experience with a tour of the UNESCO-listed Pearling Path or opt for a more private, intimate trip. The flexibility means you can tailor the experience to match your interests and schedule.
The diving trips depart from Sa’ada and Bu Maher ports, both of which have historical significance in Bahrain’s pearling story. Before or after your water adventure, you can also visit the Pearling Path Visitor Centre, where guided tours help contextualise what you’ve just experienced. Understanding the history, the techniques, and the cultural importance of pearling makes the diving itself much more meaningful.
BTEA has partnered with Masar Group to run these experiences. Masar brings expertise in managing marine activities, so you’re in good hands whether you’re a nervous first-timer or an experienced diver.
One of the best aspects of this initiative is that it’s not a one-off event. These experiences will be available throughout the year, which means you don’t need to rush to book or worry about missing out. Whether you’re planning a weekend activity with friends or looking for something special to do with visiting family, you’ve got time to fit it into your plans.
The year-round availability also means BTEA is serious about making this a permanent fixture in Bahrain’s tourism landscape, rather than just a flash-in-the-pan attraction tied to one festival season.
