Nori Club Returns to Sumosan: A Tuesday Special Worth Knowing About

Bahraincover

Nori, the dark, sea-pressed sheet that wraps so much of Japanese cuisine, has a way of holding everything together without demanding the spotlight. At Sumosan Bahrain, it also lends its name to one of the most considered midweek nights on the island. Nori Club is back on the Tuesday calendar, running from 5:30 PM onwards, and we dropped in to see what the special looks like now that it has settled into its weekly slot.

The Food

The sushi and rolls are the heart of Nori Club, and the kitchen sends them out at a pace that makes it easy to share across the table and order a second round without thinking too much about it. The crispy spicy tuna roll is a reliable opener, with heat that builds slowly. In contrast, the salmon truffle roll is the dish to order if you’re after something richer and a little more indulgent, the truffle dialled in just enough to lift the fish without taking it over. The yellowtail sashimi arrives cold and precisely cut, dressed with restraint, and is best ordered early in the evening while your palate is still sharp.

Beyond the rolls, the menu rewards a tasting approach, with smaller plates landing in waves so that the meal builds gradually rather than arriving all at once. It suits the social pace of the evening and gives the table something to keep returning to between drinks.

The Cocktails

The bar list reads as a thoughtful edit rather than a long catalogue, leaning into Japanese ingredients like yuzu, shiso and sake without overplaying the theme, and rounded out with a handful of well-made classics for anyone who prefers to stay on familiar ground. The sakura martini is delicate and floral, holding up against the sushi, while the smoked old-fashioned is the better order for a heavier meal or a later seat at the bar, arriving with just enough smoke to register without overwhelming the glass. Service from the bar team is attentive throughout, with drinks landing in good time and refills offered before the table runs dry.

The Setting

Sumosan has been a steady island-favourite since it opened at Marassi in 2024, drawing a crowd that comes for the food but stays for the room and the vibe, and Nori Club takes that same space and softens it into something more social. By half past five, the light has dropped enough to make the wood tones glow against the darker surfaces, the bar begins to fill, and the dining room loosens into a longer, easier kind of evening that suits the way Tuesdays tend to unfold when you’re not quite ready to go home.

A resident DJ works through a set that leans into low, textured beats designed to sit underneath the conversation you’re having at the table, which means you can hear the person across from you and still feel the pull of the music whenever there’s a lull in the talking.

The Crowd and the Vibe

Nori Club draws a mix of regulars who clearly know the format and newer faces who have come in to see what the night is about, which makes for a relaxed and social atmosphere that builds steadily from the early sitting through to the later hours.

The dress code reads smart-casual in practice, with most guests dressed for a refined evening out without straying into formal territory, and the room comfortably holds both small groups catching up over dinner and larger tables settling in for the long haul. By around eight, the energy lifts as the DJ pushes the set a little further forward, and the room hits a comfortable hum that defines a good midweek night out.

What to Know Before You Go

Nori Club runs every Tuesday from 5:30 pm at Sumosan, Marassi Al Bahrain. Reservations are recommended, particularly for groups of four or more and for tables after seven when the room fills out, and the format is best approached as a long, grazing evening rather than a quick dinner stop. Walk-ins are accommodated where possible, though the bar tends to be the easier landing spot once the dining room is fully seated.
