International Museum Day falls on 18 May, and the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities has developed a programme that extends well beyond the date itself. Across two weeks, the country’s museums open up for guided tours, workshops, lectures, and one-off exhibitions, with most of the activity centred at the Bahrain National Museum, Kanoo Museum, Qal’at Al Bahrain Site Museum, and the Post Office Museum.
It’s a useful reminder of how much sits inside these buildings. Bahrain’s museum collections span 5,000 years of Dilmun-era artefacts, regional trade history, postal archives, fine art, and the legacies of figures who shaped the country. International Museum Day exists to draw people back to these spaces, and this year’s programme is built for that, with plenty of free, family-friendly entry points alongside the more specialist sessions.
On Monday, 18 May, the Bahrain National Museum and the Qal’at Al Bahrain Site Museum open their doors, offering an accessible way into the celebrations and a good day to bring first-time visitors.
Running until July at the Bahrain National Museum is the Life and Legacy Exhibition of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, open daily from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.
For the foodies, Darseen Cafe, located at the Bahrain National Museum, is running a special menu throughout May called From the Table of Tylos. The dishes draw on the flavours of the Tylos era, one of the earliest civilisations to take root in Bahrain.
From Monday, 18 May to Saturday, 23 May, the Kanoo Museum is open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The museum, built in memory of YBA Kanoo, traces Bahrain’s history as a regional trading hub.
Several standout sessions are scheduled here:
Preserving Memory and Human Expression, a panel discussion with Ahmed Al Kuwaiti, Khalid Al Hashimi, and Mohammed Al Haddad, moderated by Shouq Al Alawi. From 7:00 pm.

On Friday, 22 May, the Bahrain National Museum is hosting a weekend of activities for children from 4:00 pm. Kids can try pottery-making, paint on wood, create their own Dilmun seal, and build a traditional mosaic door.
Later, on Saturday, 23 May at 6:30 pm, the museum welcomes a special showcase from Zayed National Museum (UAE) exploring the ancient relations between Magan (present-day UAE) and Dilmun (present-day Bahrain).

A run of guided tours opens up the collections to visitors who want a closer look:
Post Office Museum offers tours in Arabic and English from 5:00 pm, including its collection of stamps spanning generations.
Guided tours of the HH Shaikh Mohammed bin Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa Life and Legacy Exhibition at the Bahrain National Museum, in Arabic on 1 June and English on 3 June. Both from 5:00 pm.
Whether you’re a long-time resident or visiting for the first time, the programme offers an easy way in. Pick a tour, bring the kids to a workshop, or simply turn up on 18 May and walk through the doors.
