Monsoons arrive on Earth like a magical, free subscription of entertainment and enrichment, for all of us, filling us up with joy and sweetness every single time! Ever wondered what makes monsoons so appealing?
Truth be told, yeah, after the 55 degrees toasted us all in Bahrain, rain at this point obviously sounds appealing to anyone! Okay, but really, is it the shiny roads or the misty breeze? Or do we love monsoons because we get to curl up with a coffee hugging our palms, watching raindrops slowly trickle down that café’s windows?
Or is it the air perfumed with petrichor – an earthy scent emerging from the soil as the first drops of rain fall. Or would you say it is the tenderness of a cosy grey overcoat-like sky? The melodic rhythms of the rainfall over the car’s sunroof, and the aroma of freshly fried pakodas and cutting chai to go with it? Or is it the silky waterfalls amid 19 shades of green in the forest? Are these elements what make monsoons so joyous? I sat back and realised, the answer is no.
I realised that the source of our monsoon joys isn’t the season itself, but rather the people we welcome these rains with! Monsoon’s bliss does bring its props on stage; props that look, smell, taste and feel so good, but it is actually the people we live it with that make these experiences so fulfilling! Think about it. Would that dreamy, long drive mean anything if it weren’t for someone you love, driving you around, smiling and glancing over at you between lane changes?
Would that favourite song of ours be playing at that same loud volume in that drive, if it weren’t for them singing the chorus with us sitting in the passenger’s seat? It is the ticklish joy of sharing an umbrella while crossing a glistening road, trying your best not to get drenched but inevitably getting a little drenched, that actually makes the rains so much more fun!
Backyards of uncles and aunts echo with laughter as we rejoice in the rain, children’s colourful paper boats floating in the ponds, and the jolly puddle jumps. Laughing away while stuck in rainy traffic jams together is what makes the delay less cold and boring, while cuddling on the couch on a drizzly day makes it just as warm and soothing!
The joy of shared experiences is actually where all the magic happens, enhancing the charm of every rainfall and every monsoon. Human beings are wired to feel most satisfied in shared experiences; the most fulfilling days and nights are those that are enveloped in love, warmth, and a comforting sense of belonging.

So, next time the rain says hello, run to your people, grab them, grab a kettle and some cup noodles and go celebrate the rain with them.
