Meet The Bahraini Sisters Behind This Edgy, A-List Music Video

It was shot in hip Hollywood hangout Jones, but one new music video has a link a little closer to this region. The film for Interpol’s latest single, “If You Really Love Nothing”, was the work of Bahraini director Hala Matar, and stars award-winning actress Kristen Stewart.

The video (which you can now see on YouTube), also features American Horror Story actor Finn Wittrock, with the atmospheric clip following the star and Stewart on a wild night out. The project was inspired by Tod Papageorge’s photography from the Studio 54 era, Hala tells Vogue.me, adding that a collaboration between her and the American rock band has been in the works for some time.

The director brought in her sister, creative director Hind Matar, to style the shoot, with disco-worthy sequins and sharp suiting dominating the video. “Hala and I have collaborated many times and once this project got confirmed, she asked me to style it,” Hind added. The fashion choices were inspired by the “modern, fun, chic, and glamorous mood”, she revealed, with looks boasting “rich textures and sparkles”. “Kristen and Finn had to have very distinctive looks that go with the lyrics,” Hind says. “The extras played different characters, so I dressed them in looks that suited them and the characters they embodied.” Think reams of sequin-encrusted tulle, gem-laden fringing, and glimmering ankle boots, all which upped the glam-rock ante.

Working with the Twilight star and Wittrock was a dream come true, Hala reveals, adding that “directing them was effortless”. “They are so talented and understood their roles immediately. Finn’s naivety and comedy was the perfect balance to Kristen’s daringness.”

Hala has previously been behind the camera for short films such as 2014’s Desire, starring Johnny Knoxville, Matthew Gray Gubler and Sophie Kennedy Clarkand 2013’s Streetcar starring Chloë Sevigny, both of which have been styled by Hind, and is about to direct her first feature film. Hind, who launched her eponymous label MATAR in 2014, is also set to style a feature film in the near future. We can’t wait to see what the pair have up their sleeves next.
