Living with the Oura Ring 5 – Part 1

A Review by Nicholas Cooksey

As a long-time Bahrain resident who maintains an active lifestyle, I’ve tested several fitness trackers over the years — from Whoop straps to various smartwatches. In my opinion, the Oura Ring 5 stands in a class of its own: a discreet, elegant smart ring that delivers deep physiological insights.

What is the Oura Ring 5?

The Oura Ring 5 is the latest generation of the Finnish company’s flagship wearable. It’s a sleek titanium ring packed with advanced sensors that track sleep, heart rate variability (HRV), resting heart rate, body temperature, respiratory rate, activity, and recovery scores 24/7. Data syncs seamlessly to a polished iOS/Android app that translates raw metrics into actionable daily, weekly, and monthly insights. And, it’s comfortable enough for continuous wear — even in Bahrain’s heat and during swims or showers.

This ring is ideal for busy professionals, athletes, and health-conscious individuals who want meaningful data. The “readiness” score has become my morning ritual — a single number telling me whether to push hard or prioritise recovery.

How Does It Compare to Other Trackers?

Compared to my previous Whoop experience, the Oura Ring 5 feels more refined and less intrusive. Whoop is excellent for strain tracking but requires a subscription and a bulkier band. Apple Watch and Garmin offer broader features (GPS, notifications) but can feel overwhelming and drain batteries faster. The Oura shines in passive, accurate sleep and recovery tracking — areas where wrist-based devices often struggle due to movement. Battery life is good (up to 7–8 days), and the minimalist design pairs perfectly with both formal and casual attire.

Key Improvements Over the Oura 4

The Gen 5 brings meaningful upgrades. Enhanced sensors deliver more precise temperature and HRV readings, with better AI-driven insights and faster data processing. The new “Cardio Capacity” and improved “Resilience” metrics add depth for cardiovascular health tracking. Comfort has been refined with a smoother inner profile, and the app interface is noticeably snappier. For those upgrading from the 4, the difference is tangible in daily accuracy and long-term trend analysis.

First Impressions

One month in, I’m impressed. Sleep staging is remarkably accurate, highlighting improvements from my protein-focused diet and fasting protocols. Recovery scores have helped me avoid overtraining. The ring feels comfortable to wear, and its titanium build looks premium.

After about six months, I’ll share a deeper follow-up review.
