#IWD2021: Interview with Dana Zubari

International Women’s Day (IWD) is an annual event to celebrate women’s achievements and spread the message of female empowerment and gender equality across the world.

As the day grows near, Bahrain Confidential celebrates the achievements of women in Bahrain and around the world by putting them on the spotlight and knowing how they #ChoosetoChallenge every day.

Today’s spotlight is on Dana Zubari, Co-Founder of Tru Active Sportswear.

What does the 2021 International Women’s Day slogan, #ChoosetoChallenge mean for you in your work life?

#ChoosetoChallenge means stepping out of my comfort zone. When you step out of your comfort zone, that’s when your challenge begins.

What barriers have you faced, as a woman, in becoming successful in your field? How did you overcome them?

The barriers I had to face were not gender based. They were more of the struggles of managing a small business; the challenges of generating a steady income while going through a whole pandemic.

This year, we created a basics range for Tru Active which caters to a wider audience. This helped us widen our demographic of sales.

What’s one tip that greatly impacted you and your career trajectory?

One of the tips that greatly helped our business trajectory is not copying trends and just focusing on our business model as well as our goals.

On International Women’s Day, what is the most important message you want to send out to young women thinking about their careers?

Be passionate and choose the career you want – not what the society wants you or expects you to do. It is soul-crushing to pursue a job that doesn’t fulfill you. I started my career in the banking sector and moved to a completely different one in my 30s. I wish someone told me this in the past.

What do you enjoy doing the most when you’re off work?

I love starting my day early with a sunrise run. It just gives me a boost of vitamin D and it puts me in a great mood and it gives me an amazing start to my day.
