iCheck: How Think Pink Bahrain is Empowering Women with a Digital Self-Detection Tool

Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide, but early detection and education can make all the difference in saving lives. Think Pink: Bahrain Breast Cancer Society has been empowering women to take a closer look at their health and well-being through awareness, education, and support.

Think Pink’s mission is to spread the importance of breast self-examination. “Being “breast aware” means knowing what is normal for your body and taking the time to conduct monthly self-exams. The process takes just 8 minutes, but it can make a huge difference in early detection and peace of mind. While most lumps are not cancerous, any noticeable changes should be investigated promptly,” said Dr Julie Sprackel, Founder of Think Pink Bahrain.

Ensuring Breast Cancer Awareness Through Technology

Here’s what to look for during your breast self-examination:

  • Lumps or bumps
  • Rashes
  • Areas resembling orange peel texture
  • Unusual discharge (clear or white is normal; brown or red indicates a change that needs investigation)

Introducing the iCheck Mobile App: Your Personal Guide to Breast Health

The iCheck app was developed by Ann-Marie O’Shea and Dr Julie Sprakel back in 2015 and released in 2016. The app was upgraded in collaboration with the local tech team, CloudMe. It serves as a comprehensive breast cancer awareness tool providing vital information on breast cancer signs, symptoms, and frequently asked questions. The app also offers Decision Aids that empower users to make informed choices about their health.

“This app is more than a resource—it’s a tool for behavioural change, encouraging women to take control of their breast health,” said Dr Julie added.

As mobile applications continue to revolutionize healthcare by enhancing accessibility and patient engagement, iCheck stands out for its focus on user privacy. Protecting sensitive health information is essential for fostering trust, ensuring that women feel safe to share their experiences and seek the support they need.

Building the iCheck Symbol: The Race To a Million

Marking 20 years of driving awareness, education, and research about Breast Cancer, Think Pink Bahrain is bringing the community together for its Race to a Million campaign. The initiative, in partnership with Bahrain Bricks, will culminate in the construction of a giant symbol made up of bricks that promotes hope and resilience.

This symbol is also the trademark of Think Pink’s breast self-examination app – iCheck. Each brick used in this installation is dedicated to individuals facing breast cancer.
