As one of Bahrain’s hospitality leader, Anwar Hajjar believes in the value of connecting with the community and highlighting the island’s rich legacy. The General Manager of Wyndham Grand Manama has called Bahrain home for over 15 years and brings a deep appreciation for its unique culture and a vision for its bright future. From cherishing Bahrain’s pearling heritage to celebrating its innovative growth, he reflects on the Kingdom’s remarkable blend of tradition and modernity.

What’s the first word that comes to mind when you think of Bahrain, and why?

“Hospitality.” Bahrain is known for its warm and welcoming people. There’s genuine friendliness here; whether it’s a local offering directed with a smile or the ease with which different cultures mix and share traditions, Bahrain is a place where everyone is welcome. The kind of warmth makes you feel at home, even if you’re far from yours.

In your opinion, what does the future of Bahrain look like 10 years from now?

Bahrain’s future in the next 10 years looks promising, one full of growth, innovation, and a deeper connection to its roots. We’ll see it grow beyond, with more focus on technology, tourism, and startups, making it a hub for big ideas in the region.

If you could safeguard one aspect of Bahrain’s culture or heritage for future generations, what would it be?

If I could safeguard one aspect of Bahrain’s culture for future generations, it would be its pearling heritage. Pearling isn’t just a part of Bahrain’s history—it’s a story of resilience, community, and a deep connection to the sea. Preserving this legacy could mean more than protecting historical sites like the Pearling Path, it could also be about keeping the stories alive, teaching younger generations the skills and values of the past, and sharing Bahrain’s unique role in the world’s pearling history.

Can you share a cherished memory that perfectly captures your love for Bahrain?

Having lived in Bahrain for 15 years, my most cherished memory is the feeling of warmth and belonging I experienced from the very first day I arrived. As a foreigner, I’ve only ever been welcomed with open arms—whether on a personal or professional level. Bahrainis are exceptional communicators, eager to learn, hardworking, and always treating others as one of their own. Over the years, this country has truly become a second home for me and my family, and I’m deeply grateful for the kindness and hospitality we’ve received. I’ve fallen in love with Bahrain, and I plan to stay here as long as I can.

Do you have a favourite spot in Bahrain? What makes it so special to you?

My favourite spot is the Bahrain Fort (Qal’at al-Bahrain). Standing there, you can feel the layers of history beneath your feet, and it’s a poignant reminder of the Kingdom’s enduring legacy and its connection to the past.

Is there a Bahraini tradition or custom you wish the world could experience? Why do you think it’s so unique?

I wish the world could experience Bahrain’s pearl diving traditions. It’s a testament to the Kingdom’s resilience and its deep connection to the sea. It reflects a way of life that is both challenging and beautiful—a story of survival, community, and craftsmanship.

On this joyous occasion of Bahrain’s 53rd National Day, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, and the people of Bahrain. May this beautiful nation continue to flourish and prosper, with peace, unity, and success for all. Wishing Bahrain a bright and glorious future ahead!
