Hilton Bahrain, continuing its mission towards environmental sustainability has marked another year of Green Ramadan. The hotel’s renewed efforts, returning for the second time, are part of a broader regional collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) West Asia, food waste technology provider Winnow, and sustainability platform Goumbook.
The initiative, launched to address the sharp rise in food waste during Ramadan, promotes responsible consumption and supports local food systems. In line with Hilton’s global ‘Travel with Purpose 2030 Goals’—which include a target to halve food waste sent to landfill—Hilton Bahrain is taking a data-led approach to managing resources more efficiently throughout the holy month as guests visit its iconic tent for iftar and ghabga – The Dome by STC.
A central component of the hotel’s Ramadan programme is its partnership with the Bahrain Food Bank and Peninsula Farms. Guests attending the Iftar will notice a dedicated section that highlights locally sourced produce, much of it coming directly from Peninsula Farms. The move not only spotlights fresh organic ingredients grown in Bahrain but also helps support the local agricultural sector.
Data from UNEP West Asia shows that food waste tends to increase during religious and social celebrations such as Ramadan. To address this, Hilton Bahrain has integrated the Winnow system into its kitchen operations. The technology tracks food waste in real-time, enabling the culinary team to adjust preparation methods and portions more accurately. This helps reduce surplus while ensuring guests still enjoy a varied and generous dining experience.
Any excess food that is safe to redistribute is donated to the Bahrain Food Bank, further supporting those in need during the holy month. Meanwhile, food waste that cannot be repurposed is sent to Peninsula Farms, where it is converted into compost. This compost will be used to enrich local soil, effectively closing the loop between consumption and sustainable agriculture.
Tamer Farouk, General Manager of Hilton Bahrain, said the initiative aligns with both the hotel’s sustainability goals and its desire to give back to the community.
“When our guests come together to break their fast with us, they are not only enjoying a traditional Iftar or Ghabga—they are also contributing to a wider effort to reduce food waste and support local food producers. These partnerships allow us to turn a time of giving into a meaningful environmental initiative,” he said.
Hilton Bahrain is encouraging guests to be mindful of waste during their visits and to engage with the hotel’s broader sustainability practices. By combining traditional Ramadan hospitality with environmentally conscious operations, the hotel hopes to create a more sustainable model for seasonal dining.
The Green Ramadan initiative continues throughout the month and serves as a practical example of how the hospitality sector can contribute to larger environmental goals while still offering memorable guest experiences.
