A New Island Chapter: Gulf Hotels Group is Expanding with Its First Luxury Resort in the Maldives

There’s big news out of Bahrain. Gulf Hotels Group (GHG) is making its first-ever move into the Indian Ocean, and it’s a landmark one. The Group just signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a Maldivian partner, Keiretsu Pvt Ltd, to build a luxury island resort together in Kaafu Atoll, one of the Maldives’ best-known tourism spots.

Picture this: a private lagoon, just 15 to 25 minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport. So you get that “cut off from the world” island feeling, but you’re still close enough to the airport that getting there isn’t a whole ordeal. That’s exactly the balance they’re going for.

About The Partnership

GHG brings decades of hotel know-how; they’ve been running hospitality operations for over 50 years across Bahrain, the UAE, and Africa. Keiretsu, on the other hand, knows the Maldives inside out, the permits, the logistics, the local landscape. Put those two together, and you’ve got a partnership that covers both the “how to run a great hotel” side and the “how to actually get this built in the Maldives” side.

GHG’s CEO, Ahmed Janahi, said: “This project marks an important step in Gulf Hotels Group’s growth journey as we expand beyond our traditional markets and establish a presence in the Indian Ocean region for the first time. The Maldives is one of the world’s most recognised tourism destinations, offering strong long-term fundamentals and a reputation for exceptional hospitality experiences.

The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding marks an important milestone in bringing this vision to life. We look forward to working closely with our partners to advance the project and create a hospitality asset that contributes positively to the Maldives’ tourism sector while supporting the Group’s long-term growth objectives,” Janahi added.

Keiretsu’s founder, Sofwan Ahmed, echoed that sentiment, saying, “The Memorandum of Understanding reflects our shared confidence in the potential of this project and establishes the foundation for a long-term partnership. By combining Gulf Hotels Group’s international owner-operator expertise with Keiretsu’s local experience in project development in the Maldives, we are well positioned to deliver a luxury destination that meets the highest international standards while celebrating the unique character and natural beauty of the Maldives.

We look forward to working closely with Gulf Hotels Group as we move into the next phase of the project and create a resort that contributes to the continued growth of the Maldives’ tourism industry while delivering lasting value for the destination and all stakeholders.

What’s Actually Getting Built

Think overwater villas and beachfront villas, each with its own private pool. Add in a handful of restaurants and lounges, wellness spaces, marine activities, and dedicated spots for weddings and events, basically everything you’d want from a top-tier island escape.

They’re also planning to bring in a globally recognised luxury hotel brand to put its name on the property, though the specifics of which one are still under wraps until the paperwork’s finalised.

The Business Side

Structurally, GHG and Keiretsu plan to set up a joint venture, so GHG isn’t just lending its name here; it’s putting in an investment and will actually operate the resort once it’s up and running. For GHG, it’s a strategic push to plant their flag in a globally recognised luxury market and grow their footprint well beyond the Gulf region.
