‘Onigiri‘ are balls of rice, usually wrapped with nori seaweed and containing a meat or vegetable filling. This Japanese snack is made from white rice formed into triangular or cylindrical shapes.
Like sandwiches in the West, onigiris are readily available in convenience stores across Asia and are great for a quick and easy grub. Who would have thought that this scrumptious snack is available in Bahrain?
Just recently we had a chat with Reem, who is the creator behind Onigireem (witty, right!) to know more about her small business.
Tell us a bit about your small business, what motivated you to create this?
Onigiris are Japanese rice balls formed into triangular or cylindrical shapes and often wrapped in Nori seaweeds. Traditionally, Onigiris are filled with pickled plum (Ume), Tuna, Salmon or any other salty or sour ingredient. In Japan, you can find these in local cold stores with various fillings and flavours.
What motivated me to start this mini business is its uniqueness. I believe only a few restaurants in Bahrain serve this, and so far no one else sells Onigiris from their home. Thanks to a friend of mine back in high school who introduced me to this snack.
Your onigiris have made quite an impression to the local community – what makes it so special?
I’m really glad that the locals find this snack very interesting. It makes me smile when some customers tell me that it reminds them of “Anime” cartoons or “Pokemon”. What makes it special is their continuous support and love for the Onigiris.
There is a wide array of small business in Bahrain, why should people choose you?
People always look for something unique, and I strongly believe onigiREEM.bh is the first in Bahrain to make home-made Onigiris. They are perfect for a birthday treat, family gatherings, and many more. It’s filling, it’s delicious, it’s one of a kind!
Where can our readers buy your products?
On Mondays and Wednesdays, I stock my Onigiris at @bh.Indulge. They showcase goodies that are made with love. They are located in Arad, Muharraq. However, I still accept pre-orders during the weekend.
Are there any tips you can share to those who are planning to start their own business ventures?
My advice to those who are thinking of starting a business is “Not everything will flow according to your plan, just believe, never give up, and good things will come your way”
