The electricity bill tends to arrive between June and August, looking rather more dramatic than the weather forecast. Most of that jump has nothing to do with how hot it is outside and everything to do with how hard the air conditioning is working to fight heat that never needed to get inside the house in the first place. A surprising amount of that heat enters through unshaded glass, hours before anyone has even switched the unit on to cool the indoors.
That is, in many ways, good news. It means the biggest gains often come from adjustments rather than upgrades: how a window is dressed, which way a fan spins, where a thermostat sits. None of it requires renovation. It just requires understanding what the heat is doing and where it is getting in.
Almost half of the heat that builds up indoors arrives through windows that have been left unshaded during the hottest hours of the day. Glass does not just let light through; it lets solar radiation through, and that radiation turns into heat the moment it hits a wall, a floor, or a sofa. This is one of the simplest ideas in summer home cooling and also one of the most overlooked, because the sun feels like a daytime problem rather than something that quietly reshapes the indoor climate hours later.
East- and west-facing windows tend to be the worst offenders, catching low, direct sun in the morning and evening. South-facing windows, by contrast, get more overhead sun that is easier to block with something as simple as an overhang or awning.

Many fans are left running clockwise year-round, gently stirring warm air near the ceiling without doing much for the people underneath. It is worth remembering that fans cool people, not rooms. Leaving one running in a space wastes electricity without any benefit, so it makes sense to switch it off when you leave.

A commonly recommended range for comfort without excess is around 24 to 26 degrees Celsius when someone is in the house, with a higher setting during the hours nobody is home. This is one of the more approachable pieces of energy-efficient cooling, since it costs nothing and takes seconds to test.
Pairing a slightly higher thermostat setting with a ceiling fan running correctly often achieves the same comfort at a lower energy cost than a colder setting alone. It is less about tolerating more heat and more about letting two systems do the work that one was doing on its own.
