The next time you’re having a cup of coffee at City Centre Bahrain, you will be contributing to an innovative new green initiative! The mall has launched its latest sustainability initiative in partnership with ReQahwa, a Bahraini startup dedicated to repurposing coffee waste.

This innovative collaboration will see City Centre Bahrain working closely with over 20 coffee shops, including Costa Coffee, Nomad, Illy Café, and Romeo’s. Collecting used coffee grounds from these outlets, ReQahwa then transforms them into charcoal, showcasing a unique approach to waste management and resource optimisation.

City Centre Bahrain’s decision to team up with ReQahwa is more than just about a recycling effort. The mall operates per a broader strategy aimed at boosting the Bahraini community and the spirit of local innovation. ReQahwa is founded by Bahraini entrepreneur Hamad Alrowaish.

“We are incredibly proud to join forces with ReQahwa and support a local initiative that aligns perfectly with our sustainability goals,” said Duaij Al Rumaihi, Mall Director at City Centre Bahrain. “This partnership also supports a local startup that is making significant strides in environmental conservation. It not only helps manage waste but also transforms it into a valuable resource. By working together, we are setting a new standard in the retail sector for eco-friendly practices. Our tenants’ participation underscores a collective commitment to a greener future, and we hope this inspires other businesses to adopt similar sustainable practices.”

Special bins will be located at designated points within the mall where café staff can dispose of coffee waste. ReQahwa will collect these waste bags and convert them into charcoal, with the process demonstrating how everyday business operations can integrate sustainable practices.

It will also turn every cup of coffee served within City Centre Bahrain into a symbol of conscious choice and environmental responsibility.

In addition to reducing the environmental footprint of its coffee shops, City Centre Bahrain’s initiative will see each participating café recognised as a zero-coffee waste establishment. This will be validated with a certificate and inclusion on ReQahwa’s partner webpage, promoting them as leaders in sustainability.
