Dedicated to curating unforgettable guest experiences, Jaffar Hassan, Butler Curator at Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain embodies the warmth and charm that’s symbolic of Bahraini hospitality. Holding the values of inclusivity, community, and tradition close to his heart, Jaffar’s reflections on the island’s peaceful coexistence and insights on preserving cultural practices highlight his commitment to showcasing the richness of Bahraini culture while embracing its future potential.

What’s the first word that comes to mind when you think of Bahrain, and why?

Peaceful. Bahrain stands out as a peaceful country due to its secure environment and inclusive society, where people of all backgrounds coexist harmoniously. The fact that Bahrain fosters a sense of inclusivity whether it’s through its welcoming atmosphere or the security measures in place makes it a symbol of stability in the region.

Can you share a cherished memory that perfectly captures your love for Bahrain?

My experience volunteering with medical teams during the COVID-19 pandemic speaks to a strong sense of community and duty. During times of crisis, Bahrain’s collective effort to fight the pandemic showcased a sense of solidarity and resilience. As a volunteer, I experienced firsthand, the compassion and coordination that define the country’s approach to public health and crisis management. This memory highlights not only my connection to the country but also the importance of community in times of hardship. It reflects Bahrain’s ability to unite people for a common cause, a quality that will surely continue to define the nation moving forward.

If you could safeguard one aspect of Bahrain’s culture or heritage for future generations, what would it be?

Preserving traditional farming practices stands out to me as a vital part of Bahrain’s heritage. Historically, Bahrain’s agriculture has been shaped by its natural resources, particularly the date palms and the limited arable land. Palm trees, in particular, have been central not only to Bahrain’s farming economy but also to its cultural identity.

In your opinion, what does the future of Bahrain look like 10 years from now?

I believe that Bahrain will emerge as one of the top three countries in the (GCC). This could be based on Bahrain’s ongoing efforts to diversify its economy beyond oil, investing in sectors like technology, finance, and tourism. Bahrain’s commitment to maintaining a stable political environment, strengthening education, and expanding its infrastructure could put it in a strong position relative to its GCC neighbours.

Do you have a favourite spot in Bahrain? What makes it so special to you?

Bahrain Fort is special to me because it encapsulates the essence of Bahrain’s identity in a single location. The fort represents the island’s rich history as a trading hub, with archaeological evidence of civilizations spanning centuries. The fort’s proximity to the sea, the surrounding date palms, and its historical significance make it a powerful symbol of the country’s connection to its past. Standing at the fort, one can reflect on Bahrain’s role as a crossroads of cultures and trade, and this site allows visitors to physically connect with Bahrain’s heritage. It’s a reminder of how deeply rooted Bahrain’s history is in the natural environment and the sea, both of which have shaped the country’s development over millennia

Is there a Bahraini tradition or custom you wish the world could experience? Why do you think it’s so unique?

The traditional use of palm-based medicines, which are unique due to the island’s ideal growing conditions and natural healing properties. These traditional medicines offer a blend of natural wellness that many people today are rediscovering. The perfect growing conditions in Bahrain, such as its warm climate and rich soil, create a unique environment for producing high-quality palm products. Sharing this with the world would not only help preserve this ancient knowledge but could also introduce the world to sustainable and natural forms of healthcare that have stood the test of time.
