10 Art Spaces Worth a Visit in Bahrain

10 Art Spaces Worth a Visit in Bahrain

Bahrain’s art scene doesn’t sit in one place. You’ll find it behind an unmarked door in an old family home, inside a restored courtyard once owned by a pearl merchant, or next to a café serving flat whites under a wall of contemporary paintings. Some spaces are polished, built for slow wandering. Others are scrappy and experimental, run by artists who’d rather pin up a photocopied zine than wait for a formal opening. What ties them together is how naturally art sits alongside everyday life here, sharing a building with lunch, poetry or a children’s workshop.

This guide rounds up ten of them, spread across the island.

56 Art Gallery

56 Art Gallery sits in a restored 1968 building in Gufool and focuses on emerging talent from Bahrain and the wider Gulf. It’s aimed at people who don’t consider themselves “art people”. No pressure, no jargon, just an open invitation to look, ask questions and maybe walk away with something.

Location: Gufool

Al Riwaq Art Space

Al Riwaq Art Space, recently reopened in Gufool, has been part of Bahrain’s creative scene since the late 1990s. The programme leans experimental: installations, photography, zines, the odd film night. A café and community library sit inside, so it’s easy to lose an afternoon here.

Location: Adliya

Albareh Art Space

Albareh Art Gallery in Adliya bridges established Arab masters with newer regional voices. One half runs as a formal gallery for solo and group shows, the other as a working studio space. If you want a sense of where the region’s contemporary art is heading, start here.

Location: Adliya

Busaad Art Gallery

Busaad Art Gallery occupies the 1930s Muharraq family home of Bahraini artist Ebrahim Busaad. His bold, colour-heavy paintings of folklore, calligraphy and island life have been shown at the British Museum, but seeing them in the house he grew up in adds a layer no white-cube gallery can match.

Location: Muharraq

Dar Alfann

Dar Alfann in Seef is built around Bahrain’s artistic heritage, with a wall dedicated to the poetry of Mahmoud Darwish. It’s one of the better-looking backdrops for photos in Manama, but stick around, and it doubles as a solid introduction to the country’s artistic history.

Location: Seef

La Fontaine Centre for Contemporary Art

La Fontaine Centre for Contemporary Art on Hoora Avenue was Bahrain’s first private art centre and is still one of its most ambitious. The centuries-old building holds large-scale sculpture, a fine-dining restaurant, a spa and an open-air amphitheatre for dance and music. Part gallery, part night out.

Location: Manama

Mashq Art Space

Bahraini artist Ali Kadhem Al Bazzaz founded Mashq Art Space in Argan Village in 2015. It covers painting, calligraphy, printmaking and installation, alongside talks, screenings and festivals. A children’s art programme runs through summer, plus workshops for adults keen to get their hands dirty.

Location: Argan Village, Bu Quwah

Moonlight Gallery Café

Moonlight Gallery Café in Sitra combines a working gallery with a proper café, which is rarer than it sounds. You sit among sculptures and paintings with a wide drinks menu close by, and the art itself leans emotional rather than decorative. Good for a slow coffee that turns into an hour.

Location: Sitra

Rashid Al Khalifa Art Foundation

The Rashid Al Khalifa Art Foundation in Riffa occupies the childhood home of Bahraini artist Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa. Converted from a 1920s house, the space mixes his own work with a private international collection and runs artist residencies. Clean walls, soft lighting, nothing flashy, which is rather the point.

Location: Riffa

Safeya Ali Kanoo Hub for Arts

The Safeya Ali Kanoo Hub for Arts was founded in 2021 under the Bahrain Trust Foundation and officially opened in 2023. It’s less a gallery than a working creative campus, with studios, a digital design lab and a gift shop alongside the exhibition space. The autumn calendar includes a Children’s Cancer Awareness Month event in September, then collective exhibitions through October to December, among them Bahraini Women’s Portrait 4.

Location: Manama
