Maritime Moment: A Bahrain-Qatar Ferry Route Has Just Been Launched!

Bahraincover

Bahrain and Qatar have made history with the launch of their brand new ferry service, opening an exciting new chapter in Gulf travel. The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications has officially announced this long-awaited maritime route, set to completely transform how we discover and explore our neighbouring shores.

You’re probably wondering: How do I travel from Bahrain to Qatar by sea? The new maritime link connects Al Ruwais Port in Northern Qatar with Bahrain’s Sa’ada Project in about 70 minutes. So you would board the ferry in Muharraq and a short ride later, you’ll be on the northern shores of our neighbour. Al Ruwais is about an hour’s drive away from the capital, Doha.

The project has been in the works for a while, with leaders from both countries strengthening ties through infrastructure. Plans for a land bridge and maritime connections have long been part of the conversation between these two Gulf neighbours, and today’s launch marks a significant milestone in that vision.

The benefits are tangible and immediate. The sea route promises to slash both travel time and costs, making cross-border journeys more accessible for everyone. But beyond the practical advantages, this maritime connection represents something deeper. It’s about fostering people-to-people engagement, encouraging cultural exchange, and boosting regional mobility in ways we haven’t seen before.

Bookings and Schedules

With 70-minute trips between the two ports, travel time through this new maritime link will be dramatically shorter than both land and air alternatives. Currently, driving from Bahrain to Qatar takes around 4.5 to 5 hours, whilst air travel (door-to-door) eats up between 3 to 4 hours of your day.

Ready to book your first voyage to Qatar and back? Here’s your simple step-by-step guide:

  • Download the Masar Application – this is currently the only way to book your ferry tickets.
  • Once you’re in the app, select “International Trips”, then choose your Origin and Destination Ports (Saada/Ruwais). Add the number of passengers travelling with you, and you’ll move to the next page where you can pick your departure time.
  • From Bahrain, there are two daily sailings: the morning ferry departs at 8:00 AM, arriving in Al Ruwais at 9:10 AM, whilst the evening service leaves at 8:00 PM, reaching Al Ruwais at 9:10 PM.
  • From Qatar, the ferry leaves Al Ruwais at 10:20 AM daily, docking in Bahrain at 11:30 AM. The second departure is at 10:20 PM, arriving in Saada at 11:30 PM.
  • After selecting your preferred date and sailing time, simply proceed to checkout and complete your payment. Easy as that!
  • One crucial reminder: Don’t forget to bring all necessary travel documents on the day of your voyage. Your passport and any required visas should be with you when you arrive at the port.

Only Passengers for Now

The Bahrain-Qatar sea crossing will only ferry passengers for now. Unconfirmed plans are hinting towards a full-fledged ferry service wherein you can transport your vehicles across the sea, too. This service has, however, not been launched yet.

The Operator

Masar, a subsidiary of Bahrain’s Sovereign Wealth Fund, Mumtalakat, is operating the ferry service between Bahrain and Qatar. Masar also operates the Water Taxi in Bahrain, which connects several jetties on the island, giving tourists and local explorers a fun way to get around.

Are There Other Maritime Routes Connecting Gulf Countries?

Maritime routes offer a beautiful return to simpler times. As roads grow congested and air travel costs rise, Gulf countries are investing in smart, sustainable alternatives through sea and rail networks. The Bahrain-Qatar sea link is just the beginning of this exciting regional transformation in travel.

This shift isn’t just about nostalgia. It’s about reimagining how we move through our region with both the environment and our quality of life in mind. Ferry services produce lower emissions per passenger than cars or planes, whilst offering a far more relaxed travel experience.

The inaugural voyage symbolises more than just a new transport option. It represents renewed camaraderie between Bahrain and Qatar, opening up possibilities for shared experiences, business opportunities, and countless memories yet to be made. Your next Gulf adventure starts now.
