All You Need To Know About Your Driving License in Bahrain

Bahraincover

Getting a Bahrain driving license is your gateway to exploring the Kingdom at your own pace. From booking your learner’s license to renewing your driving license, it’s also a very convenient process. Whether you’re a new resident settling into island life or a citizen ready to get behind the wheel, navigating Bahrain’s roads starts with understanding the essentials. From applying for your first Bahrain driving license to keeping it current, here’s your complete guide to driving in the Kingdom.

Here’s what we’re covering in this guide:

Getting Your Driving License

Ready to hit the road? The process is straightforward. Citizens and residents can apply for a Learner License through the Bahrain driving school services, where you’ll find accredited driving instructors operating in Bahrain. The whole process can be done online, and once you’ve paid the learner’s license fee, you can begin with practical driving lessons.

Your driving instructor will help you clock up those essential training hours – whether you’re looking for car driving lessons or training for a motorcycle license. Once you’ve completed your lessons, you can book your driving test appointment and work towards getting your full license.

Keeping Your License Valid

Your Bahrain driving license doesn’t last forever, but renewal is simple if you stay on top of it. You can renew your license up to three months before it expires, so there’s no need to wait until the last minute.

If you’re under 60 with a valid Bahraini license, renewal is typically hassle-free. However, you’ll need to settle any outstanding contraventions first. For court-related fines, sort these out with the General Directorate of Traffic (GDT) before completing your online renewal.

Special circumstances:

If you’re 60 or older, you’ll need to visit the GDT for a medical examination for your license renewal. The same applies if your license has expired for more than three years.

Don’t let your license lapse. Late fees kick in at 500 fils per day for the first 40 days after expiry, then jump to a fixed BD 20 fee. It’s far easier (and cheaper) to renew on time.

For non-Bahraini residents, remember that you’ll need a valid residency permit to renew your driving license. Once you’ve renewed, you can track your new license delivery through Bahrain Post on bahrain.bh or via their mobile app.

Applying for an International Driving License in Bahrain

Already licensed? If you’re planning international travel, you can apply for an international license that lets you drive legally in other countries. It’s a useful document to have tucked away for your next adventure abroad. Your eKey is required for this service.

Life on the Road: The eTraffic App

Now you’re driving, make life easier with the eTraffic app, the essential Bahrain traffic fines app. This handy tool also lets you report accidents quickly without hanging around at the scene.

You can admit responsibility for minor incidents, view accident reports, and keep tabs on any pending contraventions, whether they’re minor or major fines. It’s the kind of digital convenience that makes dealing with the less pleasant aspects of driving a bit more bearable.
