July brings a proper mix to Bahrain’s cinema screens, from a Minions spin-off to a live-action Moana and the next Spider-Man outing. Here’s everything opening this month, along with where to catch it.
Minions & Monsters The Minions’ rise to Hollywood stardom takes a chaotic turn when their own experiments unleash monsters on the world, leaving them to clean up the mess.
Misdirection (Radha Mitchell, Charles Cottier, Loan Gruffudd): A couple working through a string of break-ins to clear a mob debt find their latest target turning the tables, flipping a calculated heist into a fight for survival.
Mind Trap (James McAvoy, Aisling Franciosi, Kristin Zakala): Two couples turn up at the same countryside mansion after a double booking, and an awkward mix-up spirals into something far stranger.
The Furious (Joe Taslim, Brian Le, Miao Xie): When his daughter is kidnapped by a criminal network, Wang Wei teams up with journalist Navin, whose wife has also disappeared, for a martial arts thriller directed by Kenji Tanigaki.
Siccin 9 (Burcu Almeman, Fahrettin Avci, Buse Kayali): A curse triggered decades ago by a mother’s scream resurfaces when her grandson returns to his father’s house.
Infiltrate (Mitra Sui, Lisa Berry, Tim Rozon): Agent Lily Chen is blackmailed into carrying out assassinations to save her kidnapped husband, forcing her to weigh duty against family.
Off the Grid (Josh Duhamel, Greg Kinnear, Peter Stormare): A scientist disappears off the grid to stop a company from weaponising his work, then turns his own knowledge against the strike force sent to find him.
Moana (Catherine Laga’aia, Dwayne Johnson, John Tui): The live-action retelling follows the young wayfinder as she leaves Motunui with the demigod Maui to restore the heart of Te Fiti. No confirmed release date had been listed at the time of writing, so it’s worth checking with your local cinema closer to the date.
Seven Snipers (Ryan Kwanten, Radha Mitchell, Tim Roth): A retired sniper settled on a remote Australian ranch is pulled back into action when a warlord from her past threatens her daughter, reuniting her old team for one last fight.
Pinocchio: Unstrung (Richard Brake, Robert Englund, Adrian Burton): Geppetto introduces his grandson James to a wooden puppet named Pinocchio, who slowly turns from an innocent companion into something far darker.
Ipman Kungfu Legend (Yu-Hang To, Philip Condron, Steven Dasz): Ip Man leaves the police force to open his own martial arts school, then has to defend it when a Western boxing gym starts buying up the competition.
I, Object (Anna Faris, Karl Urban, Bentley Storteboom): After losing his father, ten-year-old Tom retreats into an imagined world where everyday objects come to life, helping him work through his grief.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day (Zendaya, Tom Holland, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink): Peter Parker returns to a city that no longer remembers him as Spider-Man. Watching his old friends move on without him sparks a change in Peter, one that turns out to be the only thing that can stop a new threat to the people he loves.
For a straightforward night out, Cineco is one of Bahrain’s most established names. It’s been running since 1968 and now has five branches, in Juffair, Seef, Al Hamra, Wadi Al Sail and Al Liwan, which makes it the easiest cinema to reach from almost anywhere on the island.
If you’re after something more elevated, VOX Cinemas at City Centre Bahrain in Seef and The Avenues in Manama is worth the trip. It runs premium formats including THEATRE, GOLD and MAX screens with Dolby Atmos sound, and it was the first cinema in the Middle East to introduce IMAX with Laser and Sapphire technology. Its 4DX screens add motion and sensory effects on top of that. The MAX screens, with their extra legroom, armrests and side tables, are worth the upgrade for a film you’ve been waiting to see properly.
Over on the west side of the island, Cinépolis has two locations, one at Atrium Mall in Saar and another on Amwaj Islands, both useful if you’d rather not cross town for a film. EPIX at Dana Mall in Sanabis is one of the larger setups on the island, with ten screens and more than 1,100 seats spread across smaller rooms and a multi-level balcony.
For Bollywood and Indian cinema, Mukta at Juffair Mall is the one to know. It’s the only Indian cinema chain with an international footprint, founded by filmmaker Subhash Ghai, and it focuses on solid multiplex screenings at prices that don’t stretch the budget.
Showtimes shift fairly often across all of these, so it’s worth checking each cinema’s website or app before you head out.
