Neighbourhood Guide: What To Do in Amwaj Islands

Bahraincover

You’ve either been living in Bahrain for a while and still haven’t made it out to Amwaj Islands, or you’re visiting Bahrain for the first time and want to know more about this “floating city” – whatever your reason, you’ve come to the right place because we’re about dive into all things Amwaj.

Let’s start with 101: Amwaj Islands is a man-made archipelago off the coast of Muharraq and one of Bahrain’s most popular waterfront destinations. The gated development combines residential living with leisure and dining, all set around canals and marinas.

Originally built as a luxury residential project, it’s evolved into a self-contained community with beach clubs, international restaurants, water sports facilities, and a distinctly coastal atmosphere. Whether you’re visiting for the day or planning a staycation, the islands offer a quieter alternative to central Manama whilst still delivering on entertainment and dining options.

Get Out on the Water

Amwaj Marina

Amwaj Marina is the islands’ boating hub and connects directly to the open sea. It’s a five-star facility with berths for yachts and smaller vessels, plus access to boat rentals, sea tours to nearby island attractions, and sailing charters. The marina accommodates everything from casual day trips to fishing expeditions, making it the natural starting point for anyone wanting to explore Bahrain’s waters.

Sea Tour companies operate from the marina and offer scuba diving courses, snorkelling trips, pearl diving experiences, and tours to Jarada Island. They also run private fishing trips and handle equipment hire if you want to go out independently. Certification courses are available for those looking to get properly qualified, and recreational diving options suit beginners.

Community Spots

The Lagoon

The Lagoon is Amwaj’s main commercial district, designed as a family-friendly hub with indoor and outdoor space. You’ll find retail shops, cafés, and regular cultural events throughout the year. It’s the kind of place you visit for a coffee, some shopping, or just to walk around. The mix of indoor air-conditioned areas and outdoor waterfront seating makes it workable year-round.

Amwaj Drive

Amwaj Drive runs through the heart of the islands and is lined with practical outlets: salons, restaurants, and everyday services. It’s where residents go for errands, but it’s also become a dining destination in its own right. Kojo, the Japanese restaurant, recently relocated here from its previous spot, bringing its loyal following along with it.

Relax and Unwind

Argan Day Spa

Argan offers spa treatments for men and women, with wellness packages and massage options that cover everything from deep tissue to aromatherapy. If you’re staying on the islands or just visiting for the day, it’s a straightforward choice for downtime without having to travel back into the city.

Grafeatti Bistro and Bowl

Grafeatti combines bowling with a casual bistro menu and street art interiors. The space is covered in graffiti by local artists, giving it an industrial, creative edge that stands out from the polished finish of most Bahrain venues. The food menu covers international dishes, and it’s popular with groups and families looking for something more interactive than a standard restaurant. The bowling lanes stay busy, so it’s worth booking ahead if you’re planning to visit on weekends.

The Right Vibe

Solymar Hotel & Beach

Solymar has built a reputation as Bahrain’s party destination. The beachside venue hosts regular events, DJs, and themed nights that draw crowds throughout the week. If you’re looking for energy and a social scene rather than quiet beach time, this is where it happens.

Dining and Drinks

The K Lounge Amwaj

The K Lounge overlooks the water and operates as both a cocktail bar and a premium shisha lounge. It’s an indoor-only space with the same internationally inspired menu that the Juffair branch serves. The drinks list includes signature cocktails, and the setting is more upscale than casual, making it better suited to evening visits than afternoon stops.

Katana Torii

Katana Torii specialises in Japanese fusion, with ramen, sushi, and yakiniku grills at the centre of the menu. The noodles are made in-house, and the broth is the kind that keeps people coming back. There’s a sushi bar if you prefer to watch your food being prepared, and the yakiniku tables let you cook your own meat at the table.

Lanterns Gourmet Lounge

Lanterns focuses on Indian cuisine with international influences. The menu includes gourmet dishes, signature cocktails, and regular entertainment. It’s a solid option if you’re after something flavourful and a bit more refined than standard curry houses.

Murphy’s Irish Pub

Murphy’s is open from midday until 2:00 am and shows live sports on 22 screens. You can play bowling, billiards, and darts between drinks. It’s the kind of pub that works for both casual afternoons and late-night hangouts, with a menu that covers the usual pub food basics.

Nando’s

Nando’s sits on the waterfront at Amwaj Lagoon. If you’re already familiar with their South African flavours and peri-peri infusions, this location just gives you the option to enjoy it with water views.

Shrimp Pot

Shrimp Pot serves seafood with a twist. The menu goes beyond standard preparations, and it’s considered one of the better seafood spots in Bahrain if you’re looking for something a bit different from the usual grilled fish and prawns.
