Hey there, travellers! If you’ve begun planning your summer travel itineraries, this is important information. AirAsia X has just announced a new long-haul route linking Kuala Lumpur to Bahrain and onward to London Gatwick, with flights set to commence on 26 June 2026. What this really means is simple: Bahrain is no longer just a stopover. It is now the airline’s first strategic hub connecting Southeast Asia to Europe.
For travellers based in the Kingdom, this opens up two significant corridors.
Let’s break it down.
The Kuala Lumpur–Bahrain–London service marks AirAsia X’s second Fifth Freedom route, allowing the airline to operate between Bahrain and London as part of a broader multi-sector journey. This move places Bahrain at the centre of a growing long-haul network, bridging Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
For the Kingdom, this is more than an aviation update. It signals a deepening of Bahrain’s role as a logistics and tourism hub. Increased connectivity typically translates into higher visitor flows, business travel opportunities, and expanded cargo movement. The airline’s broader group ecosystem, including cargo and maintenance services, is also expected to scale alongside the new route.
From Bahrain, passengers can now access Kuala Lumpur daily, with departures at 20:45 and arrival the following morning at 10:05 local time. The return service departs Kuala Lumpur at 22:00 and arrives in Bahrain at 00:40 the next day.
London-bound travellers can depart Bahrain at 02:25, arriving at London Gatwick at 06:20. The return flight leaves London at 09:25, landing back in Bahrain at 18:55. All services operate daily.
For those connecting beyond Kuala Lumpur, the airline’s wider network spans 95 destinations across 23 Asian countries, with close to 2,000 weekly flights. That includes routes to Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Australia and Japan, offering travellers from Bahrain a cost-effective gateway deeper into Asia-Pacific.
The aircraft operating the new service is the airline’s Airbus A330 fleet, configured for long-haul travel. Economy seats remain the brand’s signature value offering, while the Premium Flatbed option provides a more elevated experience for those seeking additional comfort on extended sectors.

To mark the launch, introductory one-way promotional fares start from BHD 39 from Bahrain to Kuala Lumpur and from BHD 41 to London, with subsequent fares beginning at BHD 50 and BHD 41 respectively, subject to availability. Premium Flatbed fares start from BHD 199 and BHD 159 on each sector.
Bookings are open until 22 February 2026 for travel between 26 June and 30 November 2026, via the airline’s website and mobile app.
Here’s the broader picture. Establishing Bahrain as a strategic hub strengthens the Kingdom’s connectivity profile at a time when competition among regional airports remains intense. Direct employment across aviation operations is expected, alongside opportunities in tourism, hospitality, and logistics.
In practical terms, travellers from Bahrain gain more competitive pricing options to two high-demand destinations. Businesses benefit from easier access to Southeast Asia and the UK. Tourism stakeholders gain another channel to attract inbound travellers.
For frequent flyers, students heading to Malaysia or the UK, families planning summer escapes, and entrepreneurs managing cross-continental operations, this route adds flexibility and affordability to the mix.
Bahrain has long positioned itself as a nimble, well-connected gateway. With AirAsia X choosing the Kingdom as its first European strategic hub, that positioning now has another strong endorsement.
