In celebration of forty years since the beginning of The International Cultural Moussem of Assilah, the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities is pleased to present a book documenting Bahraini artists’ participation in the festival through testimonials and photographs shared by the artists.
Assilah, a small fortified coastal fishing village in Northern Morocco is renowned for becoming an important cultural hub for the region and the Arab world at large. The International Cultural Moussem of Assilah is a summer festival held since 1978 when two local friends, Mohammed Melehi, an artist and curator, and H.E. Mohamed Benaïssa, a photographer and politician (formerly Minister of Foreign Affairs & Minister of Culture) had invited artists to paint murals on the medina’s white-washed walls.
Since then the festival attracts 100,000 visitors each season with a full program of cultural activities such as concerts, lectures, poetry readings, exhibitions and visiting artists from all over the world. Artists come to cover the whitewashed city with murals as well as participate in the many art workshops offered where artists can exchange and work in a creative environment.
Bahrain and Bahraini artists established strong ties with Assilah from the festival’s inception where the artists’ experiences have touched, influenced or shaped their artistic careers. The book titled “Assilah – 40 years” produced by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities is a tribute to Assilah, the vibrant open-air museum through the words and works of those Bahraini artists who have participated in the festival throughout its 40 years.
